There are many modern variants of Whist played for fun. The traditional game of Whist survives at social events called whist drives. In the 1890s, a variant known as Bridge Whist became popular which eventually evolved into Contract Bridge. ![]() In 1873 Jules Verne depicted Phileas Fogg, the protagonist of "Around the World in Eighty Days", as an enthusiastic Whist player. By this time Whist was governed by elaborate and rigid rules covering the laws of the game, etiquette and play which took time to study and master. Many subsequent editions and enlargements of this work were published using the simpler title Cavendish On Whist. In 1862 Henry Jones, writing under the pseudonym "Cavendish", published The Principles of Whist Stated and Explained, and its Practice Illustrated on an Original System, by Means of Hands Played Completely Through, which became the standard text. It became the standard text and rules for the game for the next hundred years and led to the game becoming fashionable. Edmond Hoyle, suspected to be a member of this group, began to tutor wealthy young gentlemen in the game and published A Short Treatise on the Game of Whist in 1742. The game takes its name from the 17th Century whist (or wist) meaning quiet, silent, attentive, which is the root of the modern wistful.Īccording to Barrington, Whist was first played on scientific principles by a party of gentlemen who frequented the Crown Coffee House in Bedford Row, London, around 1728. Whist replaced the popular variant of trump known as Ruff and Honours. Whist is a descendant of the 16th century game of trump or ruff. ![]() Also, I have sensitive skin and I’m allergic to wool, and this is one of the few winter sweaters that I have found that is cozy, comfortable and not itchy.”Īlong with Brennan, fashionistas including former bachelorette and HGTV “Love It or List It Vancouver” star Jillian Harris, Texas-based blogger Bridget Barbier-Mueller and countless others have rocked the ottoman slouchy. ![]() “I wear it with leggings over my tank when I head to Pilates, I wear it with skinny jeans and sneakers on the sidelines of the soccer field, and if I want to dress it up I will pair it with Spanx faux leather leggings and over-the-knee boots. “It’s suitable for any activity of my life,” she tells CNN Underscored, adding that she owns the tunic in six colors. Instagram influencers have hopped on the bandwagon too, with the likes of fashion blogger (and former Ralph Lauren buyer) Kate Brennan of The Chic Series recommending the cozy sweater to her 71,000 Instagram followers. Lastly, the heavy-knit ribbing lends texture, which goes a long way to camouflage any bulges you’re looking to keep under wraps, and it’s a great defense mechanism against spills and stains too. Next up: It’s stretchy! Made of cotton, nylon and spandex, the tunic isn’t a limp noodle instead, it hugs in the right places, despite its slouchy, oversized shape. Roomy and flattering, the cut provides more coverage than a crewneck but in a way that isn’t as constraining as a standard turtleneck. As someone who lives in a cold climate I am going to get more wear out of this in transition seasons or cool summer nights rather than the dead of winter.Your CNN account Log in to your CNN accountĪmong devotees, the Ottoman’s mock neck is one of several design details worth raving about. For the price I think it is expensive for what it is, cotton lounge sweater. I like it and if I lived in a different climate I would get more wear out of it. I do think this is a flattering sweater but perhaps more for weekend not the office. So is the Free People Ottoman Tunic worth the hype? In my opinion not really but I don’t wear leggings all that often and prefer wool to cotton. I wouldn’t say this is a perfect dupe but it is a good one. But perhaps that is due to the sizing as there is less extra fabric to slouch. Also the mock neck seemed to stand up a bit more on it’s own. I didn’t find the fabric as rough at the neck. I did find the Kinley to be softer than the Ottoman. For me I would likely have to size up to get a similar fit to the Ottoman tunic. I find the fit more snug through the bum and hips. I find it fits the same in the shoulders and arms but is a bit less oversized through the body. The Kinley Tunic is a similar ribbed cotton, nylon, spandex blend. Not as cheap as the amazon dupes but half the price of the Ottoman sweater. Another Canadian blogger was raving about this sweater from a Canadian company out west. This and this from amazon look suspiciously similar but reviews show that the fit isn’t the same. There are countless dupes at this point though. I am guessing the tunic style and popularity are what drive the price. Usually for that price I am thinking cashmere not cotton. ![]() ![]() It is $148 USD which comes out to about $200 in CAD. The Free People Ottoman sweater is not exactly cheap. However I found it the right weight and warmth for a cool spring day. And it wasn’t nearly as warm as the cashmere or wool sweaters I usually wear. I found the neckline itchy compared to my cashmere or even other wool sweaters. I got this sweater originally in the dead of winter and I didn’t end up wearing it for two reasons. I don’t think the Ottoman tunic is particularly warm. I like this neckline and it would be great if you don’t love snug turtlenecks but want something more than a crew neck. The mock neck is very wide and while not rigid does mostly stay up on it’s own. I like that it isn’t snug on my bum and hips. I could easily size down but it wouldn’t drape the same. I have loads of room in this sweater through the body. You don’t really notice that the sleeve is a snug fit compared to the rest of the sweater because of the stretchy fabric. The arms fit slim but there is more room in the shoulder due to the drop sleeve. Size wise I took my usual size and got a large. The sweater comes in a range of colours that seem to change frequently aside from a few staple colours like black. ![]() Ssh-ed25519, or and may end with a comment. When the coloring and the source go hand in hand, that is exactly where the magic happens. Well, if you can sing the way he did, and want to sound similar, you need to get that microphone. If it is boosted around 5k, it means that it will pick up those frequencies in the voice of the performer and give them more presence. Why is this important? It is important because the frequency response will determine the microphone’s performance. You can check this rather simple video on which a YouTube user analyzes the frequency spectrum of the 565SD and finds these peaks to be unacceptable. It features some peaks around the 5 kHz that can be annoying or disturbing depending on the voice tone of the user. The Shure 565SD is not what you call an impeccable-sounding microphone. While some have issues with that (as seen in the comments of the post linked above), many are generally accepting of it. However “regular” anal sex is generally thought of as the husband penetrating the wife. If you want to argue with me, you can do so there, but for the purpose of this post, let me restate my prior assertion that I don’t believe it is wrong to engage in anal sex in your married sex life, provided it’s with your spouse. We’ve already done that in the post Is anal sex a sin. Now, I’m not terribly interested in re-hashing the “Is anal sex sinful” argument. So, let’s tackle that and then move on to the rest. So, there a few questions in there, but the biggest one is “is pegging sinful”. Is “pegging” sinful? What would be the wisest way to express my desire to my wife? I hope I’m not being too explicit, but I need your help in this area because I aspire to a fulfilling sex life AND spiritual life. This does not mean that there is a sort of pretending of gender role reversal, but the physical pleasure associated with the prostate and new emotional connection. I want to be sure of where this stands biblically if in the confines of a Christian marriage. Being a heterosexual male brings the stigma of it being a “gay thing” and although I know that I may enjoy it and become more intimate with my wife, I certainly do not want to desire a sinful act. I have been interested to try “pegging” with my wife (which is the act of anal penetration of the man with a toy like a dildo or strap-on of some kind), but am afraid for many different reasons. I have recently had an interest in anal play meaning I am receiving anal pleasure. In that time, I have had many conversations about our sex lives and we have found out that I have a higher sex drive than she does and I am more adventurous when it comes to trying new things as long as they are not sinful and we are both on the same page about it. My wife and I have been married for a little over a year now. You guys have helped us immensely so far through the articles and podcasts. Plus, I received this question a couple of weeks ago: I think that number has gone up over the last 4 years, and it’s gotten to the point that I figured I should address it. From that survey, we found out that 8% of husbands were engaging in pegging or similar activities in their sex life. Way back in 2014, for those who weren’t following us yet, I posted the results of our survey on Christians, Anal Sex and Anal Play. Those in our private Facebook group know it’s been even longer – and my wife knows it’s been quite a long time coming.įor some time, I’ve been getting more and more questions about pegging.
